From Brewster McCloud - surprisingly found on Ten ($40 plain cotton) Undies reference blog. I have not seen this movie in many years although I did record the opening credits (Lift every voice and sing!) off YouTube for a mix CD a while back. There are two surprising things about Shelley and Bud in these movie. First of all, Shelley is even more endearing in this one than she is in Bernice Bobs Her Hair.

Second, Bud is really shockingly ripped, as exhibited in the numerous scenes where he is shirtless and does pull-ups.

Vienna 1900 at Neue Galerie. So I went into the show knowing I would really like the pieces and recognize most things but they still had some surprises: Freud's couch, Schönberg's small paintings, and the big room on the 3rd floor comparing Loos and Hoffmann blew my mind. I will go again and again until June 27.

Twin Peaks. I have waited to watch this show since placing a hold on the DVDs at the NYPL last fall. Now it is on instant play. Thus far I have exercised enormous self-restraint and only watched two episodes.

What happens when boy rebellion is relocated not in the testosterone-induced pout of the hooligan but in the sneer of the tomboy? Tomboyism generally describes an extended childhood period of female masculinity. If we are to believe general accounts of childhood behavior, tomboyism is quite common for girls and does not generally give rise to parental fears. Because comparable cross-identification behaviors in boys do often give rise to quite hysterical responses, we tend to believe that female gender deviance is much more tolerated than male gender deviance. I am not sure such tolerance in such matters can be measured or at any rate that responses to childhood gender behaviors necessarily tell us anything concrete about the permitted parameters of adult male and female gender deviance. Tomboyism tends to be associated with a "natural" desire for the greater freedoms and mobilities enjoyed by boys. Very often it is read as a sign of independence and self-motivation, and tomboyism may even be encouraged to the extent that it remains comfortably linked to a stable sense of a girl identity. Tomboyism is punished, however, when it appears to be the sign of extreme male identification (taking a boy's name or refusing girl clothing of any type) and when it threatens to extend beyond childhood and into adolescence. Teenage tomboyism presents a problem and tends to be subject to the most severe efforts to reorient. We could say that tomboyism is tolerated as long as the child remains prepubescent; as soon as puberty begins, however, the full force of gender conformity descends on the girl. Gender conformity is pressed onto all girls, not just tomboys, and this is where it becomes hard to uphold the notion that male femininity presents a greater threat to social and familial stability than female masculinity. Female adolescence represents the crisis of coming of age as a girl in a male-dominated society. If adolescence for boys represents a rite of passage (much celebrated in Western literature in the form of bildungsroman), and an ascension to some version (however attenuated) of social power, for girls, adolescence is a lesson in restraint, punishment, and repression. It is in the context of female adolescence that the tomboy instincts of millions of girls are remodeled into compliant forms of femininity.

This project would not be complete without an opportunity for the reader to engage in smell. Thus, in addition to the visual catalogue, which focuses primarily on the way perfume is gendered in advertising and packaging, an olfactory catalogue has also been included on pages 20-3. In order that one may concentrate only on olfactory composition, each fragrances sample is provided on a page without information of its name, date of creation, or packaging. These are in sealed envelopes, labeled 1-9, on pages 20-1. Please, unseal each envelope carefully, remove the paper strip inside, and give it a sniff.

A wide selection of men’s, women’s and unisex fragrances were selected for this catalogue. Although they are all available at Barney’s and Bloomingdales, they vary greatly in price, composition, cost, and target audience. On the following page, one can find information on the corresponding perfumes, and see how one’s own perceptions of the fragrances compare to the fragrance’s description. All such information is provided by the perfume’s producer and listed on the online fragrance database, Basenotes.net.[1] Some additional comments are taken from the comments of each perfume’s respective sales assistants at Barneys and Bloomingdales, New York.

These strips were saturated with fragrance on December 13^th, 2010; hopefully the odor has been well preserved. Of course, the experience of smelling a week old piece of paper will never compare to the experience of a perfume’s development over a number of hours on one’s skin. Yet, one must make compliances for the sake of study. Just as a painting is so often savagely estranged from its intended context when displayed on a bare wall in a museum, so are these fragrances, when presented on a bare white strip.

Le Labo is a niche perfume house based in Paris and with a flagship store in Manhattan. The titles of all Le Labo’s fragrances refer to their most prominent note, thus emphasizing composition and smell profile rather than packaging. Their fragrances are labeled “femme”, “homme” and “unisex”. The sales assistant at Barneys said that of the Le Labo men’s fragrances, this is the one most purchased by women.

2. Serge Lutens. Fille en Aiguilles. 2009.

Gender: Unisex

Notes: Pine needles, Vetiver, Sugary Sap, Laurel, Fir Balsam, Frankincense, Candied Fruit, Spice

Serge Lutens is a French perfume house known for using luxurious natural oils. Their fragrances are all packaged in identical bottles. All the Serge Lutens fragrances are unisex. However, the sales assistant at Barneys attested that despite the name of this perfume, men tend to buy it because of the woodsy note.

3. Frederic Malle. Portrait of a Lady. 2010.

Gender: Feminine

Notes: Rose Essence, Blackcurrant, Raspberry, Cinnamon, Clove, Rose Absolue, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Incense, Ambroxan, White Musk

The Frederic Malle line of perfumes are not created by Frederic Malle himself; rather, in an effort to elevate perfumery to the status of art form, he decided to give perfumers their due. Usually perfumers work for large chemical companies such as IFF or Givaudan, who research fragrances while responding to briefs from fashion houses[1]. Few people know the name of the creator of their favorite fragrance. For Malle’s line, each renowned perfumer was given the opportunity to create 1-2 fragrances of his or her fantasy. Portrait of a Lady was created by Dominique Ropion. It is the only perfume in the Malle line with a specific gender classification, presumably to fit with the title. Despite all this, many of the notes are stereotypically masculine, such as sandelwood, incense and patchouli.

4. Chanel. No. 5. 1921.

Notes: Ylang-Ylang, Neroli, Aldehydes, Jasmine, Mayrose, Sandalwood, Vetiver

Chanel No. 5 is probably the most famous perfume in the world. Consequently, at least in cultures exposed to the European perfume industry, it is often thought of as one of the reference feminine fragrances. Today, many youths might consider the fragrance too “old” for them, probably because of mnemonic associations with older female family members or acquaintances. The perceived age of the perfume is largely on account of its powdery note, which was common in perfumes that first experimented with synthetics.

5. L’Artisan Parfumeur. Tea for Two. 2000.

Gender: Unisex

Notes: Ginger, Cinnamon, Green anise, Honey, Vanilla

L’Artisan Parfumeur is a niche perfume house founded in 1976 that explores fragrances of particular environments. Tea for Two is a unisex fragrance that, according to the salesperson at Barneys, is bought quite equally by men and women. It is particularly spicy, and strangely gourmand; almost anyone who has a penchant for oolong tea will notice its similarity to the fragrance.

6. Versace. Homme. 2008.

Gender: Masculine

Notes: Neroli, Bitter Orange Leaves, Citron of Diamante, Bergamot, Geranium, Blue Hyacinth, Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Oud, Mineral Amber, Musk, Tonka

Diamonds is marketed as men’s fragrance. At Bloomingdales, the sales assistant asked me if I was buying a gift for a boyfriend, brother, or father; I asked him for the most masculine scent possible and that I wanted it for myself. He presented me with Versace’s newest men’s fragrance, Homme, which is reminiscent of many of the fragrances worn by adolescent males today: Acqua di Gio, Axe, Old Spice. It is also representative of the strange contemporary trend in men’s perfume to make everything light blue.

7. Emporio Armani. Diamonds. 2008.

Gender: Masculine

Notes: Citrus, Bergamot, Cedar, Szechwan Pepper, Galac Wood, Ambroxan, Vetiver, Cocoa Bean

Armani Diamonds smells like my first crush, a thirteen-year-old Spanish boy. While having rather different notes than those of Versace Homme, the two fragrances are still smell strangely similar. They share an astringent, metallic quality that is popular in contemporary men’s perfumes. Once again, the sales assistant at Armani told me this was his “manliest” fragrance, purchased by both older and younger men.

8. Viktor and Rolf. Flowerbomb. 2004.

Gender: Feminine

Notes: Bergamot, Tea, Jasmine, Freesia, Orchid, Centiflora Rose, Patchouli

This is the more popular of Viktor and Rolf’s two perfumes. It comes in a candy pink package with black lettering. This is one of the most popular fragrances among contemporary American girls. Like Tea for Two it is considered a gourmand fragrance; it smells very sweet, perhaps like chocolate.

9. Guerlain. Mitsouko. 1919.

Gender: Feminine

Notes: Bergmot, Rose, Jasmine, Spices, Peach, Oakmoss, Cedar

Mitsouko, like Chanel No. 5 is a reference fragrance for many perfume lovers; while it is not quintessentially feminine – in France, where fragrance gender-bending is more common, it is often worn by men – it is often considered the reference chypre (cedar) perfume. It is also the favorite perfume of Luca Turin, the biophysicist and perfume critic, who developed the vibration theory of smell.

The American Perfumer magazine was founded in 1905. It originated primarily as an essential oil review. However in 1960, once synthetic chemicals became the main means of manufacturing fragrance, the title was changed to American Perfumer and Aromatics. In this advertisement for Allied Products, Inc., a cosmetic packaging company, a young woman dressed in a transparent sheath, looks over her shoulder as she sits at her boudoir and combs her hair. The text addresses the presumably male American Perfumer reader, urging him to package his cosmetics and perfume with Allied Products, so that his wife will applaud his good aesthetic judgment. The wife will thank her perfumer husband for the beautiful presentation of the perfume, not just its beautiful smell.

In the war-time cartoon from 1940, “Mrs. Jones” who can stand for any American woman, is portrayed as a dynamic producer and part of the economy.

In the 1951, also from the American Perfumer, one sees how women began to settle into their given role as consumers, not creators, of beauty products. The man’s role in cosmetics, meanwhile, is portrayed as distinctively scientific, a way of portraying the perfumer as masculine. After all, women could not possibly “know an emulsion from a dispersion.”

As synthetic chemicals reached the mass-market post-war, fragrance came to be seen as a laboratory science, not an art; this work was reserved for American men. The description of research of perfumers as “untiringly seeking new aromatic bodies” is reminiscent of war-time research into military weapons. Appropiately, the term “perfume chemist” in this advertisement replaces the term “perfumer”.

Lonestar Memories is the third commercial fragrance of Swiss perfumer Andy Tauer. Tauer is an independent, self-taught perfumer who decants, bottles and packages all his fragrances by hand. This unisex scent meant to evoke a nature-lover’s campfire and the Texas landscape features a black-and-white photograph of a cowboy. The black-and-white aesthetic seems to evoke an air of nostalgia and the cowboy the Lonestar State. The implication for men is clear: you shall smell like this stud. For women it is more ambiguous: is she meant to think she will entice this stud with her odor, or is she just a woman brave enough to smell like bugspray and bacon? While the exterior packaging distinctly implies the gender of the intended wearer, the bottle is remarkably simple compared to the packaging of large perfume houses. The graphic design is clearly home-done, particularly because of the generic typeface. Tauer’s simple bottle and unisex presentation is typical of contemporary niche perfumer houses, who attempt to endow specificity to their perfumes, rather than evoke large concepts like “Femme” or “Allure”. This may be because of a recourse of smell’s mnemonic quality; niche perfumers will often attempt to convey either specific environments or people. For example, the name of Tauer’s first fragrance is l’Air au désert marocain.

Since May 2010, Tauer has introduced a new dark blue bottle for all his fragrances.

House of Jean Paul Gaultier. “Ma dame” EDT. 2009. 4.7x2.2x.8 in. Glass, metal, plastic.

A rectangular glass bottle with a silver colored atomizer houses Gaultier’s women’s Ma Dame, a fragrance that can be bought at major department stores. The perfume is contained in a rounded trapezoid with pink inner lining, which creates the effect that the bottle is being lit with a rosy light. In the center of one of the bottle’s two large faces is the concave form of a 1.5 inch tall woman’s torso. Thankfully, this fragrance smells less banally kitsch than its punny title: a lemon vanilla. Despite the gender specificity of the bottle, the scent itself does not contain only typical feminine notes; while vanilla notes are almost exclusively reserved to women’s fragrances, citrus notes are common in men’s.

The glass bottle for Gaultier’s 1995 fragrance for men Le Male – or shall we say, “Le Mate?” – is an homage to Elsa Schiaperelli, the surrealist fashion designer’s 1937 fragrance Shocking. While Elsa Schiaperelli’s Shocking bottle is shaped like female torso with implied painted on garters evokes Freud’s aesthetic category of the Uncanny, Gaultier’s pinstriped sailor puts all emphasis on the manly package. A sales assistant at Barney’s told me that heterosexual men are embarrassed to buy the fragrance because they felt uncomfortable holding the sculpted bottle. If one notices that in the advertisement the sailor’s expression is more seductive that empathetic, Gaultier’s targeted clientele of homosexual men becomes clear.
